Meet
Dr. John
Stephan

Growing up in Chicago’s North Shore, Dr. John Stephan attended Iowa State University where he received a B.S. Degree in Genetics and his DVM degree; graduating with honors. Dr. Stephan completed a master’s degree and surgery residency at Kansas State University. During his residency, he was recognized for research endeavors in meniscal wound healing and biomechanics of fracture repair devices. He was honored twice as Resident of the Year.

Dr. Stephan is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and a member and past officer of the Veterinary Orthopedic Society. During his career, he founded and directed veterinary referral centers in Indiana and Utah while continually refining his surgical expertise.

Going strong beyond twenty-five years of helping families and their pets, Dr. Stephan remains passionate about his work and feels very fortunate to be a member of a profession he holds in high regard.

Dr. Stephan feels privileged to work alongside the talented surgeons of Colorado Canine Orthopedics. Whether faced with a challenging trauma case, limb deformity or more common joint injury, he simply appreciates each opportunity to help a family pet return to a level of physical activity and comfort that enables them to fully interact with and enjoy its family.

Dr. Stephan and his partner split their residence between Colorado and Montana; appreciating all the Mountain West offers. They share their lives with “Robbie” their German Shepherd and “Paco”, a Dutch Warmblood enjoying his retirement from show-jumping.

Whether staying close to home or with their travel trailer in tow, they most often use their precious time off fishing, mountaineering and exploring. Closer to home, you’ll find him cooking, woodworking, gardening or just tinkering.
