Visit http://www.canineortho.com/index.php/neurosurgery/intervertebral-disc-disease to learn more about canine neurosurgery and Intervertebral Disc Disease. At Colorado Canine Orthopedics our orthopedic veterinary specialty team includes four board certified veterinary surgeons with over 50 years of combined experience. All of our surgeons are Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) involves degeneration of the intervertebral discs that often lead to disc herniation resulting in spinal cord or spinal nerve compression. The syndrome can affect all breeds but toy breed dogs such as Dachshunds and Pekingese are more commonly affected. Dogs with thoracolumbar (back) IVDD often have acute signs ranging from pain to hind limb staggering to complete hind limb paralysis (dragging the hind limbs). Colorado Canine Orthopedics was able to surgically correct this dog's IVDD and he regained function of his hind legs.
