Digital Radiography (DR) has become the gold standard for radiographic imaging (X Rays) in veterinary medicine. The DR technology offers many advantages for the staff, doctors and most importantly the patient. The time from snapping the picture to seeing the image on the screen is almost instantaneous. Adjustments can be made quickly and the total time the patient is on the X Ray table is greatly reduced. Because of this speedy process most radiographic studies can be performed without any form of sedation.
Once images are obtained using DR, the computer software allows manipulations. The image can be magnified and sharpened which results in better detail and more accurate assessment (figure 1). Side by side comparisons can be made between images obtained at different times . An example would be immediate post-operative images compared to 12 weeks following surgery (figure 2).
Digital images can be viewed throughout the hospital including examination rooms, doctor's offices and the operating rooms (figure 3). When second opinions are needed the images can be easily sent across the country and be viewed by another specialist within minutes.
