External Ring Fixation for Canine Fracture Repair

External ring fixation is a treatment method that employs placement of percutaneous pins proximal and distal (above and below) to the fracture fragments with application of a frame that connects the pins externally. The frame can be used to support a fractured limb, though is often used for complex procedures such as angular limb deformity correction and distraction osteosynthesis.

Professor Gavril Abramovich llizarov invented this procedure in the 1950s after having to treat orthopedic conditions in the Kurgan region of Siberia. Originally bicycle parts were used for the frame.
